A good pres does three things: it gets everyone in the same room, it gets the costumes photographed while they still look intact, and it sets the tone for the rest of the night. Everything else is decoration.

Light it properly
Overhead lights are the enemy of a good photo. Lamps, candles and a couple of coloured bulbs will do more for the vibe than any amount of bunting.
